Ellery Cogsworth

Green Box

Ellery Cogsworth was an unassuming baby. He cried, he burped, he slept (although he did have very thin legs for a baby). As Ellery shed his baby brain cells, what took their place was truly remarkable. Colours, shapes and angles swam through Ellery’s mind, but his puny toddler body caused his family and those around him to merely squish his cheeks and coo in his face – how demeaning. One day, Ellery wished, my inferior shell will hold me back no longer!

Ellery’s fight for respect and adoration didn’t take long; his family quickly learned what an extraordinary little thing Ellery was, they knew he was destined for greatness. The Cogsworths gave Ellery everything he needed for him to forge his path to success: they had a ginormous fortune, so Ellery never went without. Titanium, no problem; plutonium, only if it was kept far away from the house; dark matter, unfortunately, no one could get their hands on the stuff.

At a rapid speed, Ellery’s mind grew and so did his ambitions. Ellery wanted to be the most fantastical, bombastical inventor ever to exist!

When Ellery’s time came to venture out into the world by himself, many had heard of his exploits and inventions. People from far and wide flocked to see if this genius mind really did exist. They were not let down. Ellery’s Homing Hat really did leap up into the air and fly onto your head – even if you’d accidentally left it locked up under the stairs. And the Sky Machine, ah, Ellery’s beloved Sky Machine, could take you around the world in 30 days without refuelling at any point – take that Fogg! And the Optimism Onion! Taking a bite from this invention filled the consumer with joy and joviality, a clear mind and a clear direction, along with delightfully smelling breath – what more could you ask for?

Word of Ellery’s creations spread quickly, creating a hurdle for Ellery – he couldn’t keep up with the demand. But there never was a hurdle that Ellery was not able to launch himself over (using his HoverPod, of course) so he set to work. He scoured in search of the brightest and politest inventors, scientists and the like to help him build up his industrious industry: Cogsworth Industries.

Success followed Ellery wherever he went (a bit like his Homing Hat!) As his workforce increased so did his ability to spend time with his customers. Ellery instantly became a household name. Who couldn’t love a charming, suave, young genius, with a slick sense of humour? Actually, slick might not be the best word to use. Obscure, that’s better, but not quite it. Outrageous, no, Ellery’s too dignified for that adjective. Chaotic, charismatic, confounding – perfect! Ellery was a joy to be around, and his confidence was infectious, however, Ellery’s quick wit was needed on many an occasion. You see, Ellery suffered violently from a peculiar case of cluelessness. Ellery never really seemed in control. He was unpredictable. His neurons sparked and fired, rushing new ideas to Ellery at a hasty pace – it was like Ellery was there but somewhere else. His body moved without restraint, jumping from one spot to the other. His words tumbled and rolled making sense and no sense at the same time.

This oxymoronic, juxtapositional chap truly won the hearts of those around him. His hilarious, precarious, and truly gregarious nature never leaves one moment of monotony.
